About ABOUT..and just what is a Lori Wall Bed...um... murphy bed alternative?
Hello!
My name is Lori Moore and I am the owner of Lori Wall Beds, which I maintain are the relatively affordable murphy bed alternative. Let's stop right there. Why do I use the term alternative? Lori Wall Beds do not utilize springs, pistons, pulleys, or any other metal mechansms to aid in the lifting/lowering function of the bed. If you can heave-ho a bed platform onto its end, and shimmy it into a cabinet, a Lori Wall Bed may be a fitting solution to your needs. As a reference, please note that I am 5'3", I weigh 120 pounds, and I am comfortable lifting the Vertical Queen unit. This unit, when taking the weight of a mattress in to account, will require the user to be able to perform a "dead lift" of 40 lbs. My beds "roll" up along rounded wooden "rockers".
I began building my beds by hand in the August of 2008 along with the help of my cousin, Jenni. The two of us built 90+ beds by hand and offered over 60 different shades of wood stain. Alas, this operation was not to prove profitable. I have since decided to allow my beds to be manufactured in Indiana, still not far from Chicago, to whom I lovingly cater. Mission Woodworking in Bristol, Indiana, is a modestly sized, very clean, CNC wood shop which has some kind of impressive eco-conscious rating given by somebody endowed with the right to do so.

You'll not find a physical address for Lori Wall Beds because, as I stated, I operate my business online, from home. I don't think everyone needs my home address.
My beds have been delivered to every state in the continental U.S. and a couple even made it in to Canada. I also have created a friendship with a talented carpenter in London who whips up a hand made version now and then, although, reaching those that are searching is not as easy as you would think. My dealings with SEO (Search Engine Optimization services) have left me bitter and untrusting of such large claims and reassurances of "guaranteed" success in web search results.
Many of the beds in my gallery depict sash lock hardware, for latching the bed. Currently, the beds created at Mission Woodworking, incorporate push-button latches. If you purchase plans to build your own Lori Wall Bed Murphy Bed Alternative (tag) window sash locks are what I recommend, but you can use any of a vast array of locking/latching hardware.
Speaking of locking, if you have children and are concerned that they may scale the cabinet like a monkey, unlock the bed and allow it to fall on a sibling, or the dog, peace of mind is as easy as installing a small latch or lock in the top of the cabinet where the kids are unaware of it, or do not have a key to unlock it. There. Simple . (SCROLL DOWN TO KEEP READING).
Aside from operating my website online, I enjoy working on a bus conversion project with my husband. We purchased a 1972 MCI MC-7 bus off of Craigslist for $4000 this past June (2011). We have been working on it steadily all Summer and now in to this Autmun, transforming the old crusty, leaky, totally gutted shell of its former self, into a cozy home for a family of four. It includes a kitchen, two sleeping areas, an office are, and a dining area.
We plan to live in the bus for a year or more while we build a home out of cob, which is a type of earthen construction. Cob homes are beautiful, hand-sculpted works of art that can be built using the ground right beneath your feet!
My "about" page has evolved in to something resembling a blog. I apologize, but you wouldn't be reading this if you didn't want to know about me, right? We do have a blog, actually: IndyGo.info

Here are the easiest murphy bed plans!
How much will it cost to build my own murphy bed? $200. How long will it take me to build my own murphy bed? 32 hours. Will I receive technical and moral support while I build my murphy bed? Yes!
Would you like to build your own Lori Wall Bed?
Allow me to explain this project to you as accurately as I can:
One of the first questions you may ask yourself is "Do I have the necessary skill?" This is a good question. I believe, however, that patience, attentiveness,
determination and a sense of humor may easily compensate for the the lack of years training as a carpenter. I was not a skilled/trained carpenter when I built my prototype in the guest bedroom of our condo on the fourth floor (I do not suggest doing all of your sawing and sanding in the bedroom as I did, I'm just painting a picture for you). After establishing the basic structure and function of what I immediately called a Lori Wall Bed, I went on to build over 90 units by hand over the next year and a half.
It is important that you understand that the measurements I give are exact, and even a 16th of an inch of inaccuracy can create problems for you.
Also, perfect 90º angles are very important. If you can handle these two basic rules, and not be too hard on yourself when you make a mistake and have to go back to the store to buy more wood, then this project may be something you can tackle and achieve success.
How long will it take me to build my own Lori Wall Bed? Probably not less than 30 hours without staining. Add a full day or two (8 - 16 hrs) for staining. Sanding accounts for about half of the duration of the project.
I can tell you what I think are necessites for this project; a table saw, a 10" mitre saw, a jig saw, a drywall "T" square, battery drill (power drills are too powerful). You may find a supplier that is able to make meticulous cuts for you, but ths is not likely, because if they do make cuts, they won't be meticulous.
Optional tools include a hand router with a 1/4" round over bit, an orbital sander (my preference), a hand held belt sander, a hand held electric wood planer, a circular saw.
Blades on all tools should all be new and sharp so as to not tear up the beautiful plywood that you took so much time carefully choosing.
$$$ How much will it cost to build my own Lori Wall Bed? This can vary from $150 to $300. I am betting, that if you use pine dimensional boards, and choose a nice plywood that costs between $22 and $35 a sheet, you will not spend more than $200.
Will I recieve moral support? Yes! I am here to help you every step of the way, if that is what you need. Please email me with your questions.
